@mahananda Consider why the earthworm needs to remain in the tunnel in the first place. Factor in nutrients, moisture, etc. and also remember that the sun has a much more direct effect on an organism if it is not sufficiently shaded.

If the worm is in the sun too long, the cuticle (the earthworm's skin -epidermis, is covered in a moist layer called a cuticle) begins to dry, This slows the exchanging of gases with its surroundings, suffocating the worm.
