What was the significance of the Battle of Midway for the Americans?

It severely damaged Japan's offensive power with the utter destruction of four of its carriers. More importantly, it also resulted in thousands of casualties consisting of pilots and experienced carrier crew that they couldn't easily replace. After Midway, the initiative swung over to the Americans for offense.
