The Ottoman Empire ceased to exist on 29th October 1923. Established 0n January 27th 1299, it had numerous 'capitals'. Söğüt (1302–26) Bursa (1326–65) Edirne (1365–1453) Constantinople (1453–1922), present day Istanbul. Ankara became the de facto capital of the newly formed Republic of Turkey on 13th October 1923, before the Republic was officially recognised.
