Rules like "divide by 100" or "move the decimal point" and so on are okay in practice, so long as you are 110% certain about which way to apply them! :-) The problem is that there's also a corresponding rule that has you multiply by 100 or move the decimal point in the other direction, and if you remember the wrong one, your answer will be incorrect. That's why I prefer to teach people how to calculate it from the fraction...
