Justinian's Law Code was the basis of European law throughout the Medieval period. The vast majority of Eastern European and Near East Christians were Greek Orthodox. The lance - acquired by the Normans from contact fighting against the Byzantines in Italy in the early 11th century,and then transmitted by the Normans to Western Europe,was the main combat weapon of mounted European knights until well into the Early Modern period.
