OpenStudy (anonymous):

a liter of cold water will warm to room temperature faster in a small black pot or in a large black pot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@inkyvoyd @iPwnBunnies

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think small black pot..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah in small black pot because it will heat up very quickly, but a large pot require time to heat up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks :)

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

uhh, I"m going to have to disagree

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

can you state the entire problem please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Y @inkyvoyd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why, i have a test in about 20 minutes >.<

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Could you please restate the problem in original wording?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a liter of cold water places at room temperature, will warm faster on a large black pot or a small black pot

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

is said liter on a stove?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@inkyvoyd Y u disagree with us? Please give the reason we are w8ing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let's say, a liter of cold pot of water, one is a large pot and the other is a small pot i placed them on my desk, which one will warm faster?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the small pot or the large pot?

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

if the pots were made of the same material and both were sealed with a lid, the large pot would warm faster.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

small pot will warm 1st.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

the reason is because the transfer of heat in this case is by conduction, and the larger the surface area the more room there is for conduction to occur

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

also, if you were to shine a light on both pots, the larger pot would absorb more heat from radiation than the smaller pot due to surface area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it doesn't say whether the lid is on or off? ://

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

it doesn't matter really. if both lids are off, there is still a larger space for the large pot to lose heat than the small pot

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

remember, both pots hold the SAME amount of water

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Large pot also have large volume, 1 litre of water doesn't occupy whole space of Large pot then??????

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

I meant to say gain heat, and yeah @waxynaveed , one can only assume such because we know for sure there is 1 liter of water constant in both containers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you guys, i wish i can give more than one medal <33333

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have to go to class and do this test, this question was from a study guide and it will be on the test

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But Sir in both pots 1 liter occupy same area, large pot need more energy to heat up.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

@Powerful22 , I'm not sure you've considered my reasoning, but I highly suggest it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I certainly did @inkyvoyd

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

@waxynaveed pots have a rather low specific heat capacity; and should not be of concern in this case because the volume of the metal or ceramic would not reach close to 1 liter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What you wrote was important, on heating and conduction. I will be tested on that for sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bye bye, omg i feel so nervous

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

@iPwnBunnies this is why I stopped helping people on OS >.< AND YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE I CAN COMPLAIN TO LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I Like this conversation. Nice to discuss with u @inkyvoyd :)

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

I feel dumb not knowing this. .-. I do agree the bigger pot will warm water up faster, given the lids are off.

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Radiation has a bigger surface area, so it disturbs the molecules more, I suppose.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

furthermore, convection currents are of no concern within the water itself because the change in temperature is not fast enough to allow for large changes in density

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

this individual comes in, and automatically assumes the first to give a direct answer is the correct one... they're going to have a bad time -.-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@inkyvoyd U WERE RIGHT! I GOT THE ANSWER WRONG AND SO DOES @waxynaveed the answer was large black pot !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right now as i'm reading what @inkyvoyd said it makes a lot of sense xD
