Here is a passage that a writer is quoting. Where should quotation marks be placed? It was a bright spring afternoon. A few puffy clouds gleamed white against the blue sky. Suddenly, out of nowhere, thunder rumbled, and a bolt of lightning divided the sky. A heavy rain began to fall. Then, as quickly as the rain started, it stopped. Within minutes the ground was dry.
