these are parallelograms, the sides are equal in length with the opposite side. So on question 15 they give you the full length of side AD which tells you that side BC will be the same length. So subtract, 18.5- 3.5. The difference will give you a.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a is 15?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you plug 15 into 2a it is asking you to multiply 15 by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then subtract 20.4 from that, and it will give you side AB

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.6 is AB?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then plug 15 into a for side CD to get that side, it should be the same as AB, if not then a is not correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does it say it is a parallelogram? If its not than the opposite sides do not have to necessarily be the same length.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is it 2a-15?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, no it wouldn't be 2a-15. Did you get that photo from your book? Can you send me a picture of an example the book gives, then I could probably figure out where we went wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sire, hold on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't find one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k, Ill see what I can do and get back to you asap

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the only way this would work is if a were a different answer for each side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh never mind I just figured it out, sorry, it's been a while since I took algebra.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so what you would need to do is set up an equation for AB and CD. Which would look like 2a-20.4=a=1.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2a-20.4= a+1.6 you would then need to put the varibles on one side and the integers on another. so you would subtract a from each side. leaving you with a-20.6= 1.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From there add 20.4 to each side. 20.4+1.6 is 22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a=22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I should have set it up on BC a-3.5=18.5 then add 3.5 to each side giving you 22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2a-20.4 is 2(22)-20.4 44-20.4 is 23.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22+1.6 is 23.6 making sides AB and CD equal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now on number 16 angles g and k are equal to each other and angles h and j are equal. We would need to start by setting up what they give us for g and k in an equation. which would look like 20a+30=17a+48. From here subtract 17a from each side and 30 from each side. This gives you 3a=18. Divide 3 from both sides. That should give you 6. plug 6 back into the equations 20(6)+30= 150 17(6)+48=150 these are both equal letting you know your on the right track. Now put 6 in for a on angle H. 5(6)=30 meaning J is 30 all the angles should add up to equal 360 degrees. If they don't then we went wrong somewhere.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hope this helps :)
