OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

First, do you know which is the dependent variable and which is the independent variable?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The independent variable is the one which is the input to the function. Here, that would be \(x\). For any value of \(x\) we supply, the function provides the value that depends on the value of \(x\) we supplied, so \(f(x)\) (or \(y\)) is the dependent variable. To solve this problem, you need to evaluate \(f(-1) = 8(-1)^5+2(-1)\)
