First, do you know which is the dependent variable and which is the independent variable?

The independent variable is the one which is the input to the function.  Here, that would be $x$.  For any value of $x$ we supply, the function provides the value that depends on the value of $x$ we supplied, so $f(x)$ (or $y$) is the dependent variable.

To solve this problem, you need to evaluate $f(-1) = 8(-1)^5+2(-1)$
