you can find the answer using long division: 7 : 9 = 0 then 0 times 9 is-> 0 <- -- 7 (difference 7-0) We have already seen that 0 times 9 "fit into" the 7; but we now try if parts of the nine will fit. We make the 7 greater by descending a digit from above - but there is no other digit remaining in the first number! If that's the case, descend a zero and put a dot in the result: 7 : 9 = 0, 0 -- 7_0_ Next, we see how often does 9 fit into this bigger number, 70. 10 x 9 is 90, 9 x 9 = 81, 8 x 9 = 72 <- still slightly to big! 7 x 9 = 63 <- this one fits!! 7 : 9 = 0,7 0 -- 70 63 -- 7 we're exactly where we were a moment ago, just that it's not one digit deeper down! you can try it out and find that the answer of the other posters is indeed correct; you'll always find 7x9 = 63, and there'll always be a difference of 7 to that, and that will become another 70, and 7x9=63 will again be the greatest multiple of 9, and so on
