I know this isn't exactly "history" I just wanna know what kind of paint is best for a beginner to use and why. best answer gets a medal.
Well, n my personal experience i would go with acrylics, i am still a beginner but when i really started painting i didn't actually know there was different kind of paints. The first one i went with oil b/c i didn't know there was a difference, i hated it at first sight b/c with oil i made a big mess on my canvas. After my teacher introduced me to oil, i felt it was easier to fix your mistakes and you have a wide variety of mixing colors and add as many layers as you want than oil or water color paints Water color the layers are clear and they require a special water color paper to have a better effect just like a canvas to oil or acrylic but the paper is really expensive depending the texture that you wanna use. That's just a personal experience response I suggest try oil to get to know the primary colors and how you can mix them up.
Acrylic is the easiest to use. Oil and watercolor are beautiful, but both are very tough to use. Acrylic is a thicket paint and you can easily paint over it if you mess up. And if you want the paint to be thinner then just add water. Using acrylics could help you with mixing new colors as well. It really is the easiest and can be very fun to use as well.
I would say water colors. It's easy to fix a mistake and it's also fun to use
