The myelin is a type of fat. By having it wraps around the nerve, it acts as a layer of insulation, which prevents the conduction of electrical pulses. between myelin cells, there are nodes which allows the conduction of pulses. Instead of all the Na/K channels open one after another along the nerve, only the ones that located at the node will open. Once the former node receives a signal, it will generate enough stimulus for the next one to be activated.
