I'd also add (A) to bek_love's answer. Another reason for the First Crusade was because the Byzantines petitioned Europe for additional help in defending themselves against the Turks who were threatening their eastern borders. To the Pope, he saw it as an opportunity to save Eastern Christendom from heretics.
