The short answer is that there were many opportunities to keep WW2 from happening. If Western Europe hadn't continued to appease Hitler's demands for territory and stopped him in Munich in 1938 by saying no, he might not have pushed his luck. For all of his bluster, Hitler was a consummate gambler. He was literally betting on the West to cave and they did despite the military superiority they had at the time. France, in particular, had an army that was roughly on par in terms of numbers with Germany. Their problem was that they relied on tactics and equipment that were outdated while the Germans had modernized. No one wanted another world war, so they tripped over themselves to avoid one even if it meant letting Hitler do what he wanted. Unfortunately, that only paved the way for him and Nazi Germany to do what they pleased. When they realized the danger, it was too late. Hitler also could have been assassinated and there were several attempts to do so even before war broke out. He could have died during the Beer Hall Putsch back in 1923. Without a spokesperson like him, the Nazi movement might never have gotten as far as it did. If countries had banded together to help rebuild Germany (as they did at the end of WW2 with Europe and Japan) and removed the war guilt stipulations from the Treaty of Versailles, the Weimar Republic could have turned out very differently.
