Island hoping was the strategy. Iwo Jima was and important strategic a base to set up bombing of Japan. The goal was to set up air support for an invasion of Japan. Not many Americans were aware of the Manhattan Project (development of the atomi bomb). Harry Truman had to be told about it when he became President, he had no idea. Truman then was faced with the decision between dropping a bomb with unprecidented power to disable Japan or send in Allied troops with the prospect of 10s of thousand of deaths.
