An enclosed gas exerts a pressure P on the walls of a container. This pressure is directly proportional to the temperature T of the gas, measured in Kelvin. If the pressure is 7 lb per square inch when the temperature is 420ºK, find the constant of variation.

Do you know what "directly proportional" means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means that one equals the other multiplied by a constant. In this case, P is directly proportional to T, so: \[P = C * T\] Where C is some constant, which is being called "the constant of variation" in this example. Plug in what you know, and solve for the constant.
