Question

in the battle of thermopylae, nearing the end of the battle, when the spartan force was starting to be overcome, many spartans fought with their fists and feet when they lost their weapons in battle. why wouldnt they just pick up some random weapon from the battlefield and fight with that instead of with their fists?

My guess oosa would be that they were fighting for their lives. So in order to survive bending over and picking up a new weapon could cause them to be killed. Where as if you're just going right into fighting with only yourself to fight with, you may have higher chances of living.
