Factor the following completely:
15x^3 − 87x^2 − 264x
GCF: x
Factors I got are:
15: 3*5
264:?

Not quite, there's a coefficient gcf! Keep looking :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
lol, oh no! uhh, 3!
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Yes
Factor a 3x out of the trinomial
OpenStudy (anonymous):
3x(5x^2-29x-88)

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
15x^3 − 87x^2 − 264x
3x(5x^2 -29x - 88)
Now, multiply 5 * -88, what do you get?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-440
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Yes, now what adds up to -29 that equals -440 when multiplied?
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Hint: one has to negative, the other has to be positive
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Idea?

What is that? @david111
& nope. @tHe_FiZiCx99
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I don't think I need that.
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Ok, -40 * 11 = -440
-40 + 11 = -29 <-- this is your middle term
3x(5x^2 -40x + 11x - 88)
Now factor that out!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok, now I'm lost...I'm too sleepy to concentrate lol
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
factor 5x^2 - 40x + 11x - 88

Why did you delete your replies? They can still see them.
Anyway, Cookii, did you factor it out yet?

Lol, he can see them...

(5x...that's all I remember
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Hmm, let's try that again cookii :>
5x^2 - 40x + 11x - 88
5x^2 and -40x have what gcf in common?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I just know the 3x goes in front of everything

5x^2 and -40x have what gcf in common?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x?
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
-40/5 = ? *
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I was gonna say -8 but I was unsure & lost lol
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
5x^2 - 40x have not only an x in common but a 5!
5x^2 - 40x --> 5x(x - 8), not the neat thing is that when you factor the other part it HAS to give you (x-8) in order to work

it does , 88/11=8
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It feels nice having @AravindG watching over us lol
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Nerp, -88/11 = -8!
So, 11x - 88 --> 11(x - 8)
Now simply put (x-8)(5x + 11)
That's it, now add the 3x outside
3x[(x-8)(5x+11)] and that's it!
OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):
Yes it does ;)
