OpenStudy (precal):

Relative Minimum Is the relative minimum value the y value?

OpenStudy (precal):

I am given f(x) = x^3-8x^2+5-5 I know the min is located at (5, -55) the multiple choice list 5 and -55. Do I pick -55 because it is a low point?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

relative minimum value is -55,

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it occurs at x = 5

OpenStudy (kainui):

Yeah to say 5 is your minimum is obviously wrong because 4 is smaller than 5. You have no restriction on your domain so you could go all the way to negative infinity basically.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

f(5) = -55 ^^^^ -55 is the function value; 5 is the input to function. feel it :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

felt it haha ;)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

@precal more complicatedly : (5, -55) is the point at which minimum occurs, this point can be represented as : (x, f(x)) = (5, f(5)) that may make it convincing to see that the function takes in 5, and spits out the value -55
