Atomic number is the top left number on the box. http://www.ptable.com/Images/periodic%20table.png Atomic number tells you how many protons are in the nucleus of the atom, and it's the number of protons that uniquely defines each atom. A hydrogen atom is exactly one proton. A helium atom is exactly 2 protons combined in a nucleus together. And so on.
