Alright...well the table says when x = 1.....y = BOTH 0 and -1 ... that would look like |dw:1398107341729:dw| We can draw a vertical line through both those points...so this is NOT a function Each input much have exactly 1 output...meaning we cannot have 2 'x = 1' ...or 2 'x = 2'

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Part B) f(x) = -x + 6 Well they want to know f(4) What is the difference between f(x) and f(4) ? well just the 'x' was replaced by a 4 ....so we do that in th function too...we replace the 'x' we see...with a 4...so f(4) = -(4) + 6 f(4) = -4 + 6 f(4) = 2 What that means (in response to the question...is when jess is 4 meters from the hoop...she only made 2 baskets

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Part C) Well it is just taking that equation from above f(x) = -x + 6 and since they want to know what it would OUTPUT (equal) when she is 'p' meters from the basket...we just replace 'x' with 'p' what would it look like then? well it would be 'x' would be replaced with 'p'....and f(x) would be replaced with f(p) so the ordered pair will be (p , f(p))

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

because f(p) is what the function equals when 'x' is replaced by 'p' ...make sense hun? :)

Yes!
