Trigonometry question. Finding height.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What trig function relates an angle with the adjacent side, and the side you want to know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: S OH C AH T OA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. I don't know if it's tan, cos, or sin.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Even then, I don't know how to use it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, you are given the adjacent side. You want to know the opposite (which is the height of the building). Sine = opposite/hypotenuse Cosine = adjacent/hypotenuse Tangent = opposite/adjacent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tangent. And you just plug in numbers. The side directly beside the angle is the "adjacent" side. The long side of the triangle is the "hypotenuse." In this triangle, the height of the building is the "opposite." Tan(x) = opposite/adjacent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x/75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tan(64) = x/75 Correct. Now just solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tan(64) is just a number. You can get it from your calculator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

153.77

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Round it, and you're done! Good work!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool, thanks for your help again. What grade are you in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My pleasure :) I'm actually a graduate student in physics.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, I was just wondering because you seem so good at trig.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I promise, if you keep doing it, it'll get easier. You'll see more of how things work, and won't have to memorize stuff so much. I really only remember a few formulas for trig at this point. SOHCAHTOA Sin^2 + Cos^2 = 1 A few double angle/half-angle formulas The unit circle. I think that's about it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, Tan = Sin/Cos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hope it gets easier, because right now it's my enemy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha, you'll be solving non-linear partial differential equations in no time. Keep it up!
