The short answer is that the people were desperate for answers. If we take Germany in the late 20's to the early 1930's during the Great Depression as an example, the economy had just taken another hit and unemployment was on the rise. People were losing their jobs, the economy was tanking again, political extremism was running wild, and no one seemed to know what they were doing in the government. At that point, the Nazis' ideas and Hitler's rhetoric seemed to promise solutions to all of those problems.
