Well first you have to multiply one of the equations by a number that will allow you to cancel out x or y.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
this is really frustrating bc it doesn't tell me what y is but it wants me to find x but I cant without knowing what y is
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Actually you can. To find x you have to cancel y. What is (8)-2?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-10?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8 multiplied by 2 is 16. Because the two is negative, the answer will be -16.

oh wait i thought you meant to say (-8)-2 sorry
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Now multiply the top equation by -2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
That's okay :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and use y=-2, right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No. You will have to use the distributive property. The equation should look like this
-2(-x+8y=4)
