OpenStudy (elizabeths):

Why is 1968 considered a year of upheaval?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

@wwhitlock

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Well, because it was. The Viet Cong brought the war out of the jungle and into the cities of South Vietnam. The Tet offensive and it's after math was a turning point of American support for the war. We lost the 10,000 plane over North Vietnam about the same time. A picture of a SVN government official executing a Viet Cong man spread world wide. Meanwhile, Peace candidate Eugene McCarthy sends shock waves by coming within 230 votes of beating Johnson in the New Hampshire Primary. Johnson later makes a speech saying he will not seek reelection and he's stopping all the bombing of North VN. Johnson's presidency is effectively over. A 10% surcharge on taxes points out his failure to provide "guns and butter." a promise he earlier made. So Bobby Kennedy enters the presidential race. One of Marin Luther Kings civil rights marches turned violent and a man was killed. Both Kennedy and King were assassinated by June of the year Hubert Humphrey hurriedly enters the presidential race. The Democrat convention was held in Chicago. Lots of groups planned to protest their. Mayor Daly of Chicago approached the situation aggressively. Police attacked protesters and that became the news instead of the convention. Humphrey was nominated by the Democrats but started behind Republican Nixon and things got worse. The terrible behavior of the Chicago police didn't help. Then Democrat George Wallace declared as an independent candidate for president. Wallace represented all the racism and hatred of the South toward civil rights gains. Nixon beat Humphrey with Wallace taking about 13% of the vote. The Summer Olympics were in Mexico City. 32 African countries boycotted because South Africa was there. Some black American medalists turned their back on the audience when the US National Anthem was played and put up a black power fist of defiance So racial strive, police brutality, a lame duck president, two prominent Americans assassinated, and public humiliation from Americans at a world wide event. There was probably more, but that seems enough.

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

Wow Thanks again =') You know a lot about history! have you taken courses ? are you a professor? @wwhitlock

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

You are very welcome. I'm a History teacher in real life. But my current assignment doesn't allow me to do much History teaching. That's why I come here and bother you guys with mini History lectures. Thanks for the opportunity. :)

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

aha ! I understand... I am soo Glad I found you! Because most people here just copy and paste it from the internet, that really bugs me.. You are so perfect you explain things the right and accurate way! (that's why I always tag you) I was just reading you bio and you are in school "High Desert Premier Academy" Am I right ? or that's the school you teach ?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

HDPA is an alternate education public school. I'm currently doing 7th and 8th grade independent studies. That's world and US history but I also teach them math, English and science. We do on one appointment once a week.

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

oh ok... so your still a student? and is it like tutoring ? and is it a Virtual School ?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

No, I'm a teacher. IS students get full credit by coming in once a week and completing enough work for 5 days of school at home. Some online, some are not. There are all kinds of reasons students come to our program.

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

so how do they find it ? and sorry for disturbing you.. but I'm soo curious to know!

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

and why don't your current assignment allow you to do much History teaching when your so talented?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

Also what do you mean by "I'm currently doing 7th and 8th grade independent studies." do like mean studying world and U.S history what 7th and 8th graders study?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

No problem. It's a public school in our School District. The High School program attracts students who get behind in units for graduation for whatever reason. My middle school students sometimes get too involved in the drama of regular school and we are a way to stay out of trouble. I have one student who sleeps 16 hours a day because of medication he is on. The sleeping is better that being dead. Another student is on track to be an olympic swimmer by about 2020. She swims at least 4 hours a day and eats like a horse. She is 11 and tiny. Then we have the actress who is often on the set for commercials and Disney and Nickaloden shows. She' not the star, but I guess she's in the crowd a lot. I also have a lot of students from a local religious group. I think they like not having to deal with people is regular schools who think they are different. Some students come from other cities around because their districts don't offer this kind of program,

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

I sit behind a desk and students come to me. I cover all their subjects in their weekly appointment. So I don't do "the show" like I used to. I actually encourage my students to come on here to get help. But they don't come much. I'm workin on that. Oh, and so you don't have to ask, I have the desk job because my cerebellum started acting up about 15 years ago and I have "mobility difficulties" I'm not in a wheel chair but have difficulty walking and easily lose my balance. My employer isn't very keen on the idea of a teacher falling over in class. Could land on a student or something.

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

Oh dear the way your explaining your students it is making me laugh really loud lol... So the school district is in Califorina ? and soo sorry to hear that... by the way isnt cerebellum related to the brain ?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

and will this problem be ever fixed ? will you like get recovered ?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

and how do other student in other state find your program ?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

the cerebellum sits at the base of the brain. It connects the brain to the spine and the rest of the nervous system. It's responsible for movement and speech. Most of the tests they do for drunk driving (walk a straight line, close your eyes and touch your nose) are testing the cerebellum and not the brain. But if your cerebellum is drunk, your brain is too. It's a genetic. Spinal Cerebellar Ataxia. Most folk with SCA are a lot worse of than I am. I won't die from it. But I'll still have it when I die. We aren't really set up to have students from out of state. I did have some students who live in Las Vegas. But the problem is they never did very much work. They came in once every 3 weeks. That could have worked but it doesn't matter how often you come in if you don't do any work. What state are you in?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

Florida...! so you got it genetically ? and why is it forever? why isn't there any solution for this ? what was your reaction when you were told you had this problem ? and how do you walk if your not using a wheel chair ? do you use a cane?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Genetic means it's a bit of DNA code that's not right. They've mapped human DNA and know a lot. I've got a Doctor at UCLA who is like the most expert of experts on this thing. But even she can't fix it. She does know all about treating the symptoms and making my life more liveable. Maybe they'll start operating on DNA strands one day or maybe stem cells can be used to grow a cerebellum in a petri dish. But until then, I've got pills and some exercises. Yes, a cane. I fight the idea of a wheel chair because in my case, that's giving up. All your classes are online?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

ok but i still hope from the depth of my heart you get recovered with this as soon as possible ! and yes i am home schooled "The Ogburn School" maybe you may be familiar with it. what do you mean about giving up ? and when does it react ? how long can you walk without losing control ?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

also you just have Mobility problem right? your arms or your tongue muscles are not weak right by any chance right ?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Haven't heard of Ogburn I'll have to check it out. We have an elementary program at HDPA. A lot of the parents use it like home school. The difference is they don't have to have their own curriculum and they have a regular teacher to talk to. I don't want to give up the independence that I do have. I'm limited in a few ways. Being in a wheel chair would be more limits. I don't judge anybody else in a wheel chair. That's just a reality for a lot of people. I mean that I will keep fighting to be "normal" as long as I can. That's why I'm still working and haven't tried to get disability payments. I have limited control whenever I walk. I don't use the cane at home. I can get around, but in public the cane is a sort of announcement thing. People see some one having trouble walking with a cane and they know how to react. Before I started using the cane i got accused of being drunk a couple of times, I don't drink. But I guess I walk drunk Have you ever gone to public school? You seem like you plan to graduate from home school. And then college. I'm guessing you are about 17.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

My legs have most of the weakness. The meds I take help me control my arms. Otherwise my arms jump around a lot. kind like a nervous tic or spasms. My speech becomes slurred sometime when I get tired. But people tell me it doesn't sound as bad as I think it sounds.

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

haha! Yes ofcourse I studied physically till 6th grade, then started Virtual schooling the reason behind this was I got one year behind when I moved from canada to dubai... (currantly in florida) so still trying to catch up! First when i started home shooling I studied in K-12 for one year then in Ogburn (price issues) and yes 17 How did you know?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

and I would prefer a cane rather than a wheel chair ! your opinions on wheel chairs makes sense... I am glad you have the spirits to fight ! btw are you from UK because mostly people get diagnosed in UK with this problem... what are your family's thoughts about this ?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

and does this effect while driving ?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

I'd like to ask you more about all this. You've got a very interesting life. But I don't want to come off as a creepy old guy hitting on high school girls, so that's going to be about it for now. I picked becuase you're reponses are mature but you are still in high school. Anyway, thank you for listening to me. I do enjoy helping you. I'm sure we'll talk again. But I gotta go to work in the morning. So good night!

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

haha... Not a Problem you can ask whatever you like ...I like to talk to "old" people not calling you because I know ur not that old... Good Night ! and thanks =') I'm sure we'll get on this tomorrow Hope you have a Good Day tomorrow.
