The origin of the Vietnam War goes back to Eisenhower and American knee-jerk opposition to anything and everything with the word "communist" in it. After the French defeat at Dien Bien Pho, Eisenhower promised the Vietnamese that there would be free national elections to unify the country in 1956. But when it became clear that Ho Chi Min would easily win, Eisenhower welshed on his promise. Johnson was mainly a victim of that same knee-jerk mentality.
