But without having seen the problem, I would suggest that you try plugging the solutions given as answer choices into the original equation to see if they work. I'm assuming the equation which was solved incorrectly gives the wrong answer, and it's not a matter of "identify the equation which we solved by a flawed method but nevertheless got the right answer"...
