Which civil rights leader became the first black Supreme Court justice?

Thurgood Marshall was chief legal counsel for the NAACP. He represented them in several civil rights cases. The most famous of which was Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka which he argued in the Supreme Court. He was appointed a Federal Judge by Kennedy and the a Supreme Court justice by Johnson.
