What reasons did the members of the Constitutional Convention have for creating the Electoral College?

There was a feeling among many of the founders that a direct election of the president would allow lead to candidates pandering to the masses. So the EC system was and extra layer to keep it from resembling mob rule.
Also, the states jealously guarded their sovereignty. Each state can set its own rules for choosing electors.
The EC also is intended to force candidates to campaign in every state and win a majority in more than just one section of the country.
