What caused the United States to enter a war thousands of miles away in Europe?

I guess the reason depends on which war you're talking about. In WW1, the US entered the war late thanks to German U-boat aggression pertaining to unrestricted sub warfare. In WW2, they only entered the war after Pearl Harbor was attacked and focused on Europe first as the most immediate threat before dealing more directly with Japan.
