Cuando yo era joven yo tocaba el piano y me gustaba. The action was years ago, you need to use the form gustaba, imperfect preterite. Yo supe las noticias. It is correct. Yo supe las noticias de esta mañana. It is a recent past action. It is perfect preterite.
