the mode is the number which appears most often in a set of date. So without knowing the mean of his scores, I believe his other test score is 85?

kgardner666 is correct: In this situation there's a mode only if one score shows up at least twice. If the scores were 90, 86, 85 and 79, there'd be no mode. If the scores were 90, 86, 85 and 85, the mode would be 85; If we're told up front that the mode is 85, that automatically tells us that there's another 85 among the test scores.
