Help me Describe how y = f(x) is transformed by each of the following: a) y = -f(x+2) – 5 b) y = f(-x) + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anything added/subtracted outside of the f(x) is up or down

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anything added/subtracted inside f(x) is left or right ----left is +, right is - the negative outside is reflected over the x-axis the negative inside is reflected over the y-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

up is +, down is - I forgot to add that. If you want to tell me what you get for each, I can check it to make sure its correct...

Thanks Jimyers, I did some readings and I understand now :)

a) y = -f(x+2) – 5 - “-f”, due to its negative sign mean it will cause a vertical flip (“upside down”) - “+2”, will cause a horizontal stretch to the left. - “-5”, being negative causes a vertical shift downwards on the graph. b) y = f(-x) + 5 - “-x”, will cause a horizontal stretch to the right. - “+5”, will cause a vertical shift upwards on the graph. **Correct me please
