What does work depend on in scientific terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Force and displacement. Medals are appreciated :)

OpenStudy (theeric):

Work depends on force and displacement in mechanical physics. Generally (meaning always true), work is the exchange of energy from one system to another. If you do work on something, you give it energy (you lose that energy). If something does work on you, you gain energy (it loses energy). The force and displacement and angle between them quantify how much energy has been exchanged. If you move a box 10 meters by pushing with a constant 5 newton force, you've used 50 joules of energy moving it. You've given it to the box. Side note: in real life, that box gave some of it to the floor because of kinetic friction.
