How does folic acid prevent nueral tube defects in infants?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

insufficient folic acid interferes with DNA replication and rapid cell division which leads to neural tube defects in the fetus. Some research has indicated that it prevents other defects from occurring by undoing the effects of some metabolic disorders which would be an issue with lower folate levels.
