Point R divides PQ in the ratio 1 : 3. If the x-coordinate of R is -1 and the x-coordinate of P is -3, what is the x-coordinate of Q? -1/3, 3, 5, 6, or -9

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the ratio 1:3 divides the line into 1+3 parts .... so if we use an equaivalent ratio of: 1/4 : 3/4 that helps us see the problem better. if the distance from P to R is equal to 1/4 the total, then the distance for R to Q is 3/4

OpenStudy (amistre64):

add the distance from R to Q to that -1 to find a value of Q
