Well this is a simple question.. Samoa is actually an independent state not associated with the United States. However, American Samoa is a U.S. territory. The U.S. first became involved with the Samoan Islands in the late 19th century. In 1899, Germany and the U.S. divided the islands into two separate regions, with the U.S. acquiring the eastern portion which became known as American Samoa.
