The higher you are, the more gravitational potential energy you have. This is because the earth wants to pull you down (due to gravity) and the further you are from the earth, the more potential energy you have to move towards it. As you move closer to the earth, the potential energy (PE) goes down, but the kinetic energy (KE) goes up.
