Even after a carrot has been pulled from the earth and cut into sticks, osmosis can still occur in the carrot cells. Imagine that you placed one carrot stick in a solution of salt water and another in plain water. Describe what would happen to each carrot stick.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The salt water has higher osmolarity than plain water. Hence, when carrot stick is placed in plain water, the cells' internal environment is hypertonic to the plain water. Water molecules then travel from the plain water in the cells across the plasma membrane. the carrot stick becomes more turgid. Similarly, when carrot stick is placed in salt water, the hypertonic salt water causes water molecules to leak out of the carrot cell wall, causing the carrot to become flaccid.
