In a way yea if I understand what you said correctly. One end of the compass needle will always point to the north pole.

great! one thing I didn't see mentioned is that if a bar magnet attracts non- magnet iron materials by making them magnetically polarized

I believe so. Weird I'm not really sure how to explain it. But the magnetic field aligns the atoms such that the their spins point the same direction. Uh, I give up trying to word this myself and I take too long. Try this: http://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=13451
