Electrical Sytems problem, Parallel or series identification

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is the second diagram parallel? I don't understand how it can be since there is no real nodes.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Because N and the earth are nodes (some current will flow out of N to the rest of the circuit).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that where the earth is connected it is a node, but how is n a node when it is only connecting two things? (in a series circuit it connects two things all the time and doesn't make it parallel)

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

When you look for the equivalent resistance, you imagine that the circuit is connected to some other electric stuff. |dw:1398417069136:dw|
