Dependent variables depend on something to give them meaning. The number of canvases she needs (or c) depends on how many friends show up. 

Does the number of friends depend on anything in that equation?

Yes, the number of friends determine the number on canvases at the party. (So maybe f is the answer.....)

F does determine the number of canvases. That means C is dependent on F. 

Nothing determines the number of friends who come over. That tells you it's independent.
