when you are adding with a negative and a positive number or fraction, you want to make sure that you are subtracting. but not all case scenarios will have you subtract remember. you are to face with: \[\frac{ 9 }{ 16 } + (-\frac{ 1 }{ 4 })\] you are to regularly subtract the two fractions, and then REMEMBER to take the sign (positive or negative) of the larger number. that will give you your answer.

Whenever you are stumped in math, try finding a "backdoor" in figuring it out. Like if you don't know how to add negative fractions, just work it out on your calculator, then divide each answer you have in the multiple choice until it matches. Or use calculusxy's way (which is the correct way) and you don't have to worry about not knowing the rules lol.
