Neil needed to move a pallet of boxes into a warehouse. The pallet was too heavy for him to lift. He slid a hand trolley with a hydraulic jack in it under the pallet. He pumped the handle up and down several times until the pallet was raised off the floor. Then he used the hand trolley to wheel the pallet into the warehouse. How did the hydraulic jack help Neil do his job?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A It increased the force he could use to lift the pallet. B It decreased the force of gravity on the pallet. C In increased the force he could use to push the pallet.

A

Or C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember it's a simple machine so it actually increases our forces

OpenStudy (atlas):

Definitely C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C is not an answer in this case as the jack was used to lift the pallet, not push it.

OpenStudy (atlas):

Hydraulic Jack works on the principle that the pressure in a fluid is constant P = Force * Area so, even if you apply less force and the area at the lifting end is less, the force gets magnified there
