Peter used a $5.00 gift certificate to help pay for his lunch. After adding a 15% tip to the cost of his meal, Peter still had to pay $2.36 in cash. How much did Peter's meal cost?

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

\[5\times.15\]

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Add what you get for the tip, then add the additional amount of money he needed to pay. Then you have your answer.

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Or do you need the difference? As in have the cost of the tip separate to the total cost of the meal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I need the difference

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Hmm, @OrangeMaster can help you finish this problem.

I can't explain how I got to the answer, because I was trying random numbers to fit, but the answer is 6.40. 6.40*.15=96 6.40+.96=7.36 7.36-5=2.36 I hope it makes sense.
