I have a research assignment on an aspect of inequality in the 20th century. I need help coming up with a thesis statement. My topic is the desegregation of the military

What do you think about the desegregation of the military? Was it too long in coming? Did it work? Was there anything about it that should have been done in a different way?

When you can answer those questions, a thesis will come easily.

If you let someone else give you a thesis, you'll have to labour over the facts to make them fit.

Lay out all of the facts you have about your topic. Find out more about anything you don't understand. Then consider those questions. When you know what you think about your topic, you can defend your thesis much more easily.
