Can someone please help me with a word problem?!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Jim, Nancy, Carol, and Hugh were really hungry one day when they got home from school. All they could find to eat was a square cake left in the freezer. After they defrosted the cake, they had to find a way to divide it equally among them. In how many DIFFERENT ways might they have divided the cake? How do you know each person will get ¼ of the cake?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

b/c there is one cake, and 4 people want to eat it, so each gets 1/4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure what you mean. The different ways to divide the cake... They could divide the cake into x pieces, as long as x/4 isn't an irrational number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or it's what Solomon said.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Tirayrm yes what i mean is how many different ways can the people get 1/4 of the cake. Can you maybe draw a picture/diagram of how the cake would be cut in different ways?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There's an infinite amount of ways to do this. It can be 4, 8, 12,16,20, it can be infinity many (assuming your knife/cutter is sharp enough).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As long as the number is divisible by 4. The equation form of it would be 4x, where x is the number of pieces and x>1,
