the area of a rectangle is 12 square inches. the length is 5 more than twice the width. find the length and width

OpenStudy (shamim):

let the width is =x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

five more that twice the width if we call the width say \(w\) and the length \(l\) this translates as \[\large l=2w+5\] since the area is \(l\times w\) the area in terms of \(w\) alone is \[A=w(2w+5)\] and since you know that it is \(A=12\) you can set \[w(2w+5)=12\] and solve the equation for \(w\)
