how was the policy of deterrence meant to prevent nuclear war? Please I need help.

Basically, deterrence in terms of a nuclear war meant that if one side had nukes, the other side would have to think twice about using theirs. They would be "deterred" from attacking out of concern over the potential retaliation. Even if a technically weaker country had a nuke or two, they could deter a much more powerful one from taking action against them.
