Although she has never studied Romanian, a Spanish-speaking woman living in Chicago can understand spoken Romanian. Why might this be the case? Spain and Romania were once part of the Roman Empire, and both languages developed from Latin, so they are similar. The Greeks forced their conquered people to learn all the Romance languages, so people in different places could communicate. Over half of the people in the world today speak a Romance language as their native language.
